About this event

The EIC is thrilled to announce the Breakfast in Rio: Project Opportunities with SBM Offshore and Baker Hughes

SBM Offshore specializes in the design, delivery, installation, operation, and maintenance of FPSO vessels. As market demands evolve, the company remains dedicated to providing safer, more efficient, and sustainable solutions for harnessing ocean energy.

Overall, SBM remains confident in the strength of the deepwater offshore market, driven by low extraction costs and reduced emissions intensity. The company projects that demand for FPSO units will remain high over the next years. In this scenario, SBM Offshore has identified numerous opportunities in the near term, especially in South America - especially Brazil, Guyana and Suriname. Namibia, in Africa, is also emerging as a new growth front. To cater for this movement, SBM Offshore has ordered its tenth MPF hull, guaranteeing the availability of two units for future tenders.

In March 2025, SBM Offshore announced the arrival of the Alexandre de Gusmão FPSO in Brazilian waters. This is the ninth unit chartered by the company to Petrobras and will be installed in the Mero Field, located in the Santos Basin. The new FPSO represents another step in SBM Offshore's strategy to strengthen its operations in Brazil, one of the company's main markets on the global stage. The unit has the capacity to produce up to 180,000 barrels of oil per day and process 12 million m³ of gas per day, and is scheduled to begin operations later this year. The Alexandre de Gusmão will be SBM's second FPSO to start operating in Brazil in 2025. In February, the Almirante Tamandaré FPSO was installed in the Búzios field, also in the Santos Basin. This unit has a production capacity of up to 225,000b/d and 12 million m³ of gas per day.

Baker Hughes is one of the world's largest energy technology companies. Headquartered in the United States and operating in more than 120 countries, in Brazil it is based in Rio de Janeiro.

In March 2025, the company announced a new contract with Petrobras to supply well completion systems. With delivery of the equipment scheduled for the end of this year, Baker's completion technologies will enable the remote operation and control of multiple zones, which reduces the flow of water and gas and minimises risks. Under this contract, Petrobras will use Baker Hughes' latest SureCONTROL Premium interval control valve (ICV), designed to provide greater reliability under the high flow rate conditions characteristic of Petrobras' offshore fields.

The company also recently secured another contract with Petrobras for the supply of around 77 kilometres of flexible pipes to be used in the Búzios, Mero, Berbigão, Sururu and Sépia fields, located in the Santos Basin. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2026, with production concentrated at the Baker plant in Niterói (RJ). The contract covers the supply of risers and flowlines for hydrocarbon production and associated gas and water injection. In addition, the systems will also combat corrosion-induced cracking caused by CO2, which can impact flexible pipelines in pre-salt fields with high gas concentrations, in line with Petrobras' commitment to minimise CO2 emissions in its operations.

Baker Hughes has long supported the development of Brazil’s offshore oil and gas sector and is committed to strengthening the supply chain and driving technological innovation, contributing to the nation’s economy.
