About this event

The EIC is happy to announce the Breakfast in Rio: Decommissioning Opportunities with Petrobras, Shell and IKM

Petrobras is Brazil’s leading energy company, with a strong presence in offshore exploration and production and a growing focus on safe and sustainable decommissioning. The company plans to invest US$9.9 bn in decommissioning over the next five years, having already submitted R$72 bn in financial guarantees to ANP. Current projects include the dismantling of the P-32 at the Rio Grande shipyard (RS) and the pre-decommissioning of the P-33 at the Port of Açu (RJ), both from the Marlim Field, while in April 2025 Petrobras began decommissioning shallow-water fixed platforms in Sergipe, starting with the Guaricema field and the arrival of jack-up rig PA-38. The Sergipe-Alagoas Basin will receive R$8.9 bn, making it the second largest decommissioning investment region in Brazil, and in 2024 alone dismantling activities are expected to inject R$15–25 bn (US$2.9–4.8 bn) into the country’s GDP.

Shell is a global energy leader with over a century of operations, playing a pivotal role in Brazil’s Campos, Santos and Barreirinhas basins. The company invested US$24bn globally in 2023 and leads in sustainable decommissioning, achieving 97% recycling rates in its projects. In 2025, Shell marked a major milestone with the completion of India’s first offshore decommissioning project at Tapti fields (removing 5 platforms and 38 wells) in partnership with Reliance and ONGC. The company is also working with high investment in decommissioning activities in Brazil, leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics to achieve 30% cost reductions while advancing its Net Zero ambitions through carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) and rigs-to-reefs programmes. With 30+ platforms decommissioned worldwide, Shell combines technical expertise with environmental innovation to set new benchmarks in responsible energy transition.
