Total makes 1bn barrel gas discovery off South Africa coast
08 February, 2019
French oil major Total has made South Africa’s first deepwater discovery in the Brulpadda structure, 175km off the country’s southern coast.
The semisubmersible vessel Deepsea Stavanger drilled the well on Block 11B/12B in the Outeniqua Basin, initially encountering 57 metres of net gas condensate gas.
More hydrocarbons were discovered after drilling to a depth of 3,633 metres, bringing the total estimate of recoverable reserves to 1bn barrels of oil equivalent.
The find could revitalise South Africa’s domestic supply and kickstart a new gas strategy for the company.
