Japan restarts another nuclear reactor
18 May, 2017
Kansai Electric Power Co has restarted reactor number four at its Takahama nuclear power plant in Fukui, 215 miles west of Tokyo, 15 months after it was forced to shut down.
Following the Fukushima disaster in March 2011, Japan shut down all its nuclear reactors.
Since then, amid public opposition and court cases, a number of reactors in the country have come online again.
Reactor number four had restarted in February last year, however, a problem with a generator led to a temporary injunction halting attempts to restart it.
A court ruled in March this year that safety standards were acceptable and that the reactor could be restarted.
Kansai has announced that the 830MW reactor will start commercial operations on 22 May.
