BP plans six new exploration wells in Azerbaijan
11 January, 2019
British oil major BP has announced plans to drill six new exploration wells in Azerbaijan by 2020 after the successful start-up of the giant Shah Deniz field in the South Caspian Sea.
According to Gary Jones, BP’s regional president for Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, the company could find a new gas field that is as large as the Shah Deniz project with a capacity of 16bn cubic metres of gas per year.
In June 2018, BP and its partners including Lukoil and Petronas brought the second phase of Shah Deniz online through a new link between the Caspian Sea and Turkey.
From 2020, gas will also flow to Greece, Bulgaria and Italy when the final stage of the pipeline is completed.
