Tour of Veolia Recycling and Energy Recovery Facility Leeds (RERF)
About this event
Veolia is the UK leader in environmental solutions, it provides a comprehensive range of waste, water and energy management services designed to build the circular economy and preserve scarce raw materials. As innovators Veolia are committed to focusing on carbon reduction by preventing pollution, preserving natural resources, protecting biodiversity, combating climate change, and raising environmental awareness.
Veolia and Leeds City Council work in partnership to manage black bin household waste in the city of Leeds, increase recycling rates and produce energy from waste. The facility successfully reduces the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere and has proved to have many benefits such as:
• Transforming waste into electricity that is used to supply heating for over 22,000 via the National Grid
• Manage up to 214,000 tonnes of waste per year
• At least 2% of black bin waste is extracted for recycling
• Environmental and biodiversity is increased with the facilities living wall – rainwater is also harvested and used on site
• Saves Leeds City Council over £7 million each year
This state-of-the-art facility which is helping to significantly reduce Leeds carbon footprint has kindly offered to open its doors to give EIC members a tour.
