About this event

The EIC is happy to announce the Breakfast in Rio - Opportunities on FPSOs with Petrobras and MODEC

Petrobras has unveiled plans to install 11 new platforms by 2027. This expansion includes the development of two major projects: the second phase of the Sépia field and the latest phase of the Atapu field, both of which are critical to the company's long-term strategy. This development creates significant opportunities for companies in the supply chain, particularly in FPSO technologies, subsea systems, and services, as well as sustainable energy solutions.

The Sépia field, located 2131 metres underwater and northeast of the Lula field, is undergoing its second development phase. This phase involves the deployment of a new FPSO unit with a production capacity of 225,000 b/d and 10 MMcm/d. The FPSO will be linked to 11 wells, including six production wells and five WAG injection wells. Notably, this unit will feature an 'all-electric' concept, replacing gas-powered machinery with electric generators, and will employ advanced technologies such as zero routine flaring and cogeneration. The project's total investment is estimated at US$6bn.

Similarly, the Atapu field, located 2230 metres underwater in the BM-S-11 concession, is also advancing with the installation of an additional FPSO unit. This unit mirrors the Sépia FPSO in capacity, with 225,000 b/d and 10 MMcm/d  processing capabilities, and will connect to a series of production and WAG wells. Like Sépia, the Atapu FPSO will incorporate sustainable technologies, including zero routine ventilation and cogeneration.

For over 50 years, MODEC has been a prominent provider of solutions in the floating offshore oil and gas sector, with operations in more than 15 countries. Their collaborative team structure enables MODEC to cultivate and share a high level of expertise.

MODEC has successfully delivered 16 production platforms in Brazil and currently has two under construction, one for the Bacalhau field in the Santos Basin, and one in the Raia fields in the Campos Basin, both operated by Equinor.

In 2024, MODEC announced its plans to undertake the Front-End Engineering Design for an FPSO-type oil production platform as part of the Gato do Mato production development project, a discovery by Shell in the BM-S-54 and Sul de Gato do Mato exploration blocks within the Santos Basin. The company will handle the design of the hull and all associated topside installations for the FPSO.

Recently, MODEC  has received the Approval in Principle (AiP) for Abate Notation from DNV, making it the first new built FPSO in the world to achieve this prestigious recognition. The FPSO is set to operate in the ultra-deep waters of Brazil's pre-salt region. This unit, with a production capacity of 220,000 barrels per day, will be situated in the Bacalhau and Bacalhau Norte licences within the Santos Basin. First oil production is anticipated in 2025.
