Export Showcase: Opportunities in Argentina
24 May 2018, EIC London, SE1 7TP
Open to: All companies
South America’s second largest economy, Argentina is also a key energy player in the region and internationally.
Although the country is a long-established hydrocarbons producer, recent discoveries of unconventional oil and gas deposits in the Vaca Muerta formation have transformed the local E&P market. Vaca Muerta is estimated to hold up to 308Tcf of shale gas reserves and will require annual investment of US$10bn, this discovery alone presents huge opportunities for overseas involvement.
In recent years, the national oil company YPF has established joint-ventures with major oil players such as Chevron, Shell, Statoil and Petronas for the development of major shale gas licences in Vaca Muerta. Pan American Energy, a BP-Bridas joint-venture that is now Argentina’s second largest O&G producer, is also involved in key shale gas developments. Various pilot drilling programmes are underway in Argentina, which will require massive investment as they progress towards the full development phase. Although Argentina’s oil and gas market is very much focused on reserves located onshore, the country offers great potential for offshore E&P activity. The government will launch in 2018 its first bidding round for offshore blocks in three decades, offering IOCs an opportunity to access frontier exploration plays which may be as prolific as those found in neighbouring Brazil.
To highlight the opportunities available and help you to find out more about doing business in Argentina, the EIC is planning an export showcase Thursday 24 May in London.
