Korea's Energy Market
South Korea is the ninth largest energy consumer in the world and is one of the world’s largest energy importers. The country’s power mix is currently dominated by coal and nuclear, with coal accounting for 40 percent of the country’s power generation, while its fleet of 24 nuclear reactors supply almost a third. Newly-elected President Moon Jae-In has committed to a reversal in energy strategy, shifting away from coal and nuclear, moving into into gas and renewable energy sources. To meet rising demand and incorporate cleaner sources of fuel into the generation portfolio the government plans to increase gas-fired generation from around 18 percent in 2017, to 27 percent by 2030 and expand the share of renewables, including hydropower to 20 percent from 5 percent
