Introduction
Now the largest event serving the LNG, LPG and natural gas industries, Gastech has seen rapid growth in recent years. The latest edition (held in Bangkok in March 2008) staged an exhibition that was not only 70% larger than in 2006, but one that also attracted double the number of visitors.
Gastech is a truly international event that brings together the main players in the global LNG, LPG and Natural Gas Industries. Gastech was launched in 1972 and has been held around the world, (initially on a biennial basis) in cities including:
London, Amsterdam, Paris, New York, Monaco, Houston, Hamburg, Nice, Kuala Lumpur, Vienna, Dubai, Doha, Bilbao, Abu Dhabi and Bangkok.
The total attendance for Gastech 2008 was over 11,500.
The Conference
Following an extensive call for papers campaign, paper entries are voted on by a 25-stong Programme Advisory Committee to build a strong programme chosen by industry leaders. The conference includes commercial, technical and speciality tracks and runs for four days during the event, attracting nearly 1,800 paying delegates.
Keynote speakers at Gastech 2008 included:
Jim Blackwell
President, Chevron Asia Pacific Exploration & Production Company
Andy Swiger
President, ExxonMobil Gas & Power Marketing Company
Jon Chadwick
Executive Vice President, Asia Pacific, Shell Gas & Power
Ahmed Al Khulaifi
COO, Commercial & Shipping, Qatargas
The Exhibition
Gastech has seen rapid growth in the exhibition side of the event in recent years. Gastech 2008 attracted 263 exhibiting companies from 38 countries covering 11,600+ m2. Over 8,000m2 of space has already been reserved for Gastech 2009.
The exhibition has attraced the following major companies:

IOC’s (including Shell, BP, ExxonMobil, Chevron, ConcocoPhillips, Total, StatoilHydro, BG Group, Occidental, RWE, E.ON, ENI)
EPC Contractors (including Bechtel, KBR, Foster Wheeler, CB&I, C.C.C, Chiyoda, Toyo)
Shipbuilders (including, Samsung, Hanjin Heavy Industries, Kawasaki)
Other exhibiting companies cover a variety of service and manufacturing capabilities. A wide range of international media companies are also present on the exhibition floor.
Conclusions
Gastech is rapidly becoming one of the major attractions in the petroleum calendar, mirroring the increased demand for clean fuels like LNG, LPC and the growth in natural gas developments worldwide. The increase in the number of both importers and exporters is driving growth in this sector, a thirst for knowledge and access to markets within the industry. This is witnessed through the steep increase in both exhibiting companies and floorspace at Gastech, but also in the huge growth in visitor and delegate numbers.
