Bolting is used in one form or another to hold together process plant in industries as diverse as Offshore Oil & Gas, Petrochemical Plants, Refineries, Power Plants, Power Stations, Wind Turbines and Nuclear. This course will give an appreciation of the importance of correct bolt load, the equipment and techniques available to tighten bolts, monitor their ongoing tightness and how to get them undone to enable maintenance operations.
Hydratight is a world leader in providing specialized engineering products and services in bolted joint and pipeline technology to the oil and gas and power generation sectors amongst others. The company was formed in 2005 following Actuant Corporation’s acquisition and subsequent integration of Hedley Purvis and Hydratight Sweeney.
As an employer over 650 people worldwide, Hydratight provide local delivery from strategic geographical locations for its hardware, software, staff, training and manufacturing operations.
Hydratight has recently also completed the acquisition of D.L. Ricci, a US based supplier of on-site machining products and services, and the German company InjectASeal, which offers on-site leak-sealing and machining services.
Ron Braid – Training Coordinator
Ron joined Hydratight Ltd in 1982 as a Field Service Technician, working extensively on Offshore Installations and U.K. sites. He played a major part in the development of Hydratight equipment, including bolt tensioners and torque wrenches. He helped develop the training course “Assembly and Tightening of Bolted Connections”, which was adopted by the ECITB as a national standard. For the past ten years Ron has been in the role of Training Coordinator for Hydratight Ltd, which includes the presentation of the training course to internal personnel.
Paul Holland – Business Development
Paul joined Hydratight Ltd in 1981 and has since had a variety of management and technical roles within the company focusing variously on the design, marketing, and manufacture of the bolting and MORGRIP products. Currently Paul is responsible for developing and marketing the company’s joint integrity products and systems.
Gary Milne – Technical Support Manager
Gary joined Hydratight Ltd in 1996, as Technical Support Manager, responsible for Global Technical Support and Development of Software and Accredited Training Courses for clients to meet with legislative requirements. Gary is currently utilizing his technical experience to underpin and manage the Global Commercial Training Division of Hydratight. Key to this role is the attendance and representation on various Committees specific to ASME/UKOOA and Industry Working Groups, ensuring Hydratight remain at the forefront of Accreditations and Best Practice
Geoff Taylor – Engineering Standards Manager
Geoff joined Hydratight Ltd in 1983. He is responsible for development of core technologies and standards within the company. This involves development of products as diverse as the MORGRIP mechanical pipeline connector and High Temperature Hydraulic Nut; and technologies ranging from Finite Element Analysis to three-dimensional parametric modeling using Pro/Engineer. Geoff is chairman of the EIC’s Technical Steering Committee and convener of CEN TC74/WG 10 – Flanges & their joints – Calculation Methods
Engineers, graduates and other personnel involved in the specification, design, verification, operation and maintenance of pressure containing plant, mechanical or structural joints, rotating equipment, pipelines or piping systems.
This course is designed for people who require an understanding of both the theoretical and the practical aspects of bolting on application using bolts from ¾” (M20) to 4” (M100) diameter.
The initial part of the course is based on the ECITB TECSkills Unit PF010 (Joining Pipework Using Flanged Joints, PF018 (Assembling & Tensioning Bolted Connections) & PF019 (Assembling & Torque of Bolted Connections) and aims to give a practical appreciation of bolting issues. This is followed by a hands-on demonstration of equipment and a factory tour.
The afternoon is split into two sessions. The first session concentrates on how design codes such as the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code and EN1591 handle flange-bolting calculations. The second session looks at the software tools available to carry out bolt load calculations and to manage joint integrity on a given installation. The session concludes with a review of operator competency and training requirements.
Participants may submit questions on engineering and operation issues faced in their jobs in advance. Attendee’s understanding of the course will be assessed through question and answer periods (including preformatted questions throughout), and workshop assignments at the end of the course.
Upon successful completion of the course, attendees will be able to:
- Highlight the differences between Torque & Tension methods of bolt tightening
- Identify the major gasket types
- Select the most appropriate bolt tightening tool for the application
- Calculate minimum bolt loads to satisfy ASME B&PV code & EN1591
- Calculate Tensioner operating pressures and Torque figures
- Appreciate the need for operator competency
- Utilize web based software for bolt load and flange stress calculations
- Appreciate joint integrity management software
- Appreciate operator competency and training requirements
