Strategically located, Singapore is the gateway to the region. Well connected by a wide network of trade and mutual recognition agreements including FTA’s with numerous countries and trade concessions such as reduced or zero tariffs, presence at OSEA 2008 secures and seals successful investments.
OSEA 2008 will be in a period when Singapore is seeing the biggest influx of investments since the 1997 global financial crisis for downstream projects on the Jurong Island. The two mega worldscale ethylene cracker projects belonging to Shell and ExxonMobil have already been activated. The US$500 million LNG terminal has been granted approval by the Singapore government, which it also hopes will involve an oil major putting up a US$2 billion LNG plant. Concord Energy has announced intentions to invest in a 150,000 barrels per day grassroots refinery. Jurong Aromatics Corporation is constructing a US$2 billion aromatics plant. Recently Novartis announced it will invest US$700 million in a cell culture production facility in Singapore.
Elsewhere in the region, BP will be looking at an expansion of another six trains from its current two-train installation at Tangguh. In Vietnam BP’s Nam Cong Son is moving onto its Phase 2. Malaysia’s Kakap and Gumusut deepwater developments are powering on. There are also a number of interesting power plant projects planned in the region. Developments at Pluto and Gorgon, amongst others in Australia, highlight the importance the region will have in the future.
