Regional Overview
Scotland is an economically advanced society and one of Europe’s most energy-rich nations, with an abundance of natural resources (land, sea, oil, gas, and renewables potential). As the Government has an ambitious target to generate 50% of Scotland's electricity from renewable sources by 2020 marine, wind and biomass will play an increasingly stronger role in the energy mix of the country.
The EIC office is in the heart of the Energy Capital of Europe, Aberdeen. This innovative and influential energy city is home to a considerable number of oil companies (both traditional and independent) and 1000’s of energy related businesses (contractors and suppliers), agencies, government bodies and research organisations. A high proportion of EIC Associate Members have offices in the area (BG Group, BP, British Energy, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Shell Exploration and Production and Venture Production) and most of the Scottish Members are situated within the North East of Scotland (with a sizeable proportion in Aberdeen itself) and many of the remainder in the central belt.
Increasing there is also diversification and transfer of the skills learnt from the oil and gas industry to the thriving renewables sector. The area hosts Offshore Europe once every two years and the All-Energy exhibition (the UK’s largest annual renewable conference and exhibition) annually.
