Why are ONS and Stavanger so important?
Despite the current market conditions proving challenging due to the low oil price environment, field developments continue and new discoveries are being made on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Despite the discoveries not being ‘commercially viable’ currently the new discoveries point to significant opportunities for the supply chain in the future.
ONS is at the forefront in discussing new technologies and provides an outstanding insight into what industry should expect in the coming years. Cost cutting and standardisation were discussed significantly at the last ONS event, despite the high oil price, and industry has since reacted. On the most significant project on the NCS for several years, Johan Sverdup, action has been taken. FMC Technologies has recently signed a contract to deliver a new and cost efficient subsea equipment. The maturity of the oil and gas province has led to significant new technologies being developed in the region to enhance recovery of existing fields. The best example of this is the Asgard Subsea Compression Project which will see recovery rates increase significantly from 67% to 87% and from 59% to 84% for Midgaard and Mikkel, respectively, while extending the life of the field to 2032. The region will continue to be a proving ground for many more new technologies and hold its position as a centre of excellence for offshore engineering.
The future for the region remains healthy, with significant opportunities expected for years to come.
